After thirty-five years in New York City, we have decided to move from Brooklyn to central New York State. The Brooklyn house is being prepped to sell (furniture moved out and a few cosmetic touch-ups). The house is in very good condition and we are offering it as is, at a fair price.
We have loved living here since our 2002 move from a Park block apartment on West 89th Street in Manhattan. It is wonderful to have a house with windows on three sides, so bright and cheery! And after having dealt with alternate side parking in Manhattan for a couple decades, having a gated driveway here -- no changing rules to keep up with and no sense of dread remembering where the car is parked -- has provided liberation from a daily task we had not realized so dominated our existence. We have wonderful neighbors on either side and up and down the block, and we will miss them.
This is an excellent place to live with a sense of neighborhood and culture. There is a good variety of restaurants with new ones regularly testing the waters. A charming "mom and pop" Internet café near the subway station has developed a real following. Aside from the more obvious amenities mentioned elsewhere on this site (museum, park, library, zoo, excellent commute, etc.), you will find a strong sense of community. It possesses charm, culture and vintage architecture, without crowding or expense.
The house itself is located within a landmarked historic district -- limited to single-family homes -- so the precious quality of life will not be endangered by sudden high-rise development or even house-to-apartment conversions. There is an active Fenimore Street block association, while the larger Lefferts Manor Association sponsors numerous community events throughout the year: free spring plants, holiday parties and other events, newsletters and holiday wreaths, for a mere $20 annual membership.
The Prospect Lefferts neighborhood has an active community online forum via Yahoo Groups, 480 members strong. It is a place where members can ask questions, post events, and generally share information and ideas. The link below will take you there. You are encouraged to look through the archives to get a sense of what the community is like and are welcome to pose questions.
